How to Begin a Logo designing project?

There is always a simple solution for critical things; Logo designing is one such thing where most of the graphic designers struggle. Especially with the question, “Where to Start?” and “How to Start?” We all know that a logo is a key element for a successful business, organization or even for a team. So this is our responsibility as a graphic designer to deliver a cool, creative and meaningful logo for our client by putting together all their ideas and needs. Get the information!

                Not every client will really know what they need. Few will have a clear idea of what they need and few may not even have any basic idea of how their logo should be. In many cases, the client will totally change the idea of the logo after you create the samples. Therefore, a Creative brief comes handy to avoid this issue. You can find a number of creative brief ideas online, or you can simply make your own depending on your working style.

The creative brief will have a set of questions which we request the client to fill. Hence your creative brief should provide information such as

·         About the Client

·         Target Audience

·         Competitors

·         Values to convey

·         Logo Style (Illustrative, Logo type, Iconic, monogram, etc.)

·         Constraints (Colors, Shapes, Upper / Lower Case, etc.)

·         Restrictions ( colors or fonts not to use)

·         Additional Information etc.

Extract the Idea!

               There is a simple solution to put up the client’s idea all together. After analyzing the entire document, you will find a keyword of what the logo should represent. For instance, let’s assume a client who wants a logo for his vegetable transport business and he add the point that he wants the logo to be royal. Now simply write down the base words and extract the keywords from it.

Base words - Vegetable, Transport, and Royal.

Keywords are those which represent or replace the base words as shown below.

Vegetable: Carrot, Greens, Leaves, etc.

Transport: Wheels, Wings, Truck, etc.

Royal: King, Crown, Nobel, etc.

Now make different combinations by picking up one keyword from each base word. For example, let’s have Carrot + Wings + Crown as one combo. Therefore at this point, you have an idea of what your logo will look like or what message that your logo should convey.

Sketch it!

                It is advisable for every graphic designer to sketch the idea on a piece of paper or preferably a dotted grid notebook. This enables the free flow of drawing your own idea and also helps to you to find a new one from the scraped one. You can take references from the internet for inspirations and nail it in your own way. Sketching will not require to be precise as it is just for your reference.

Design it digitally!  

                After putting up all your ideas on the sheet, take it to the computer and start designing your logo. Here you will have to look after that you won’t miss the basic elements of logo designing. Such as color, Shape, fonts etc. In this stage, you will still get new ideas to modify your sketched logo. Never settle down! Do as many changes you can until you are satisfied with your logo design.
